 I dispute this notion.  I know many very strong players who earn my respect
 who have not had their pictures in Card Player.  I have also seen multiple
 photos of persons who will not garner my respect (as a good player at least)
 during this universe's lifetime.   I similarly dispute the notion that everyone
 believes this.  Most good players do not.  And there's no point worrying about
 what the people who are wrong think.
  
 I agree with what you said about the social pressure of tourney toking. 
 The system should be such that players can toke without that pressure, tho
 this probably wouldn't serve the interest of those running the tournaments.
